Saori-chan's gone
Nov. 11th, 2002 04:56 pmShe came on the 1st of November, stayed in a hotel until the 4th, and then we met. On Monday, November 4th, 2002 at approximately 4:00 PM, Saori Egashira from Ibaraki, Japan (a suburb of Tokyo), and I met for the first time after having e-mailed each other for nearly a week. When I signed on to take a student from Japan for home-stay, I didn't know we'd get to be such good friends. I'd thought that we would have a much harder time because of the language barrier, but apparently I shouldn't have worried so much.
Saori-chan is insanely sweet and generous. She brought me and my family so many presents from Japan; one for my mom, one for my dad, one for me, and then three more for all of us. That was how we started the week.
On Tuesday the 5th, there was no school. So I called in Joyce, Piccolo, Stephanie, and Dana to join us for the day. Dana was sick and couldn't come, but Piccolo's little sister decided she wanted to come, and so she did. We went to an old favorite Italian restaurant of mine and rented Blade II.
On Wednesday the 6th, Saori-chan got her first taste of the American Anime Club at my school, and I'm sure that scarred her for life. There was also a party/reception thing held for us by my school's principle, who proceeded to patronize us all.
On Thursday the 7th, I have my voice lessons. Saori came with me. As far as I can tell, she really liked it.
On Friday the 8th, we went to see Rent, now staring Joey Fatone from Nsync, and proceeded to nearly lose one of her cameras. By the way, believe it or not, Joey is actually quite a good actor. I spent more time thinking of him as "Mark" than as "Joey".
On Saturday the 9th, we went shopping. Ugh. I hate shopping. But the situation was made OK when we called in Steph to come along. The three of us pranced around a mall in upstate New York nearly all day, then went and took sticker pictures that night.
And the last full day, Sunday the 10th, was spent with Liz and Serori (another student/host couple) hanging out. The plan had originally been to go to the Statue of Liberty, but that was disrupted when the tickets were sold out before we could get them. Instead, we played in a park down in Battery Park for an hour, then went to China Town and played Parapara Dancing for another hour. (The whole time Liz and I bonded over yaoi and how glad we were that our Japanese students had someone to talk to in their own language.)
Today, at 9:30 AM, a bus came and took Saori-chan, Serori-san, and the other eight students to the airport to bring them back to Japan.
