And now I bring to you a journal entry - from my dad's office, where I have been forced into hard labor for less than sweatshop pay. (Read: no pay.) I don't know if anyone's heard about it, because it's mostly a local thing, but there has been a transit strike for the last two and a half days. Now, I normally wouldn't care, because normally I'd be at home and only leaving to walk maybe three or four blocks in any direction for lunch and such. However, when dad decides that I must be in the office to "help" him (read: answer his phone, which doesn't ring that often), I get a little annoyed. Because this means a two and a half mile walk in both directions, and it's freezing outside - especially when it gets dark - and the first day of the transit strike (which is illegal, by the way) made me and my mom miss the Messiah sing-in, which has been our tradition for the last six years. I was very unhappy about that. I'm even more unhappy about what this is doing to the economy - tourism traffic has basically grinded to a stunning halt, though New Yorker foot traffic certainly hasn't, and as much as I hate tourist traffic, it's killing most of the stores that rely on said traffic for most of their yearly profits. It's also a retarded time to have a strike, simply because it's one of the busiest times of the year in terms of traveling and going out for dinner and that sort of thing. So all in all, it's not cool. Very not cool.

But whatever.

At least I got about a quarter of my holiday shopping done before said strike. I can do the rest tomorrow - it's supposed to end this afternoon. And it better. (I still don't like being here. I'M BORED!!!)

They had a front-section article about it in our paper. *hugs* Hopefully it will be over soon. *wanders away mumbling about the bloody unions*

actually this was the perfect time to have a strike. how else are they supposed to show how much power they have over the city then to grind its economy to a halt when it needs it the most. more people are in the city at christmas time than at any other time all scrambling to get that perfect gift. theyll probably get the contract provisions they were striking to get in the first place and new yorkers will hopefully remember that this is an election year and their mayor isnt playing his cards right.

No, actually, this was entirely the wrong time to have a strike. Do you know what caused the union to fold and go back to the negotiating table? New Yorkers weren't sympathetic to their cause. That was the reason given. And it's entirely true. New Yorkers don't care about these people because these people are making decent livings, have a good pension, and get free health care. They only have the power to annoy by striking, and that's exactly what they did.

Amen sister. I had to get to work, and two of my fucking finals were postponed until the second week of January because of this shit.

Also, now that this bullshit is over, are you free on January seventh? Since I recently moved and I have an attic and all now, I'm throwing a little Russian Christmas party and I was hoping you could come.
