I think it will never cease to amaze me, how, sometimes, such small things can make my students really, really happy. For instance, today after lunch, two third year girls approached my desk. These two are often in and out of the teacher's room during recess, and usually say hello, but only once have they ever stayed to talk - and that was to ask me about my bra cup size. (No, seriously, they did.)
Girl Talkative: [in English] Hello.
Me: Hello.
Girl Talkative: How are you?
Me: I'm good, thank you. How are you?
Girl Talkative: I'm fine, thank you.
Girl Quiet: Ah, me too, thank you.
Girl Talkative: [still in English] Let's talk.
Me: [laughs] Okay. What about?
Girl Talkative: {turns to friend] What aboutって?
Me: 何ついて?
Girl Talkative: Ah! Ah! Um... 休日? [back to English] What... are? You doing? [looks to Girl Quiet for confirmation]
Me: [prompting, because we have the day off tomorrow] What am I doing... tomorrow? 明日?
Girl Talkative: Ah, no, no. 週末?
Me: What did you do...
Girl Talkative: What did you do...
Me: Last weekend?
Girl Talkative: Last weekend?
Me: I went to Tokyo.
Both Girls: いいなあー!
Me: I saw a concert.
Girl Talkative: [perked up] What... concert?
Me: [debates five seconds, wondering if I should tell them and then says slyly] ...Arashhh' [Yes, I dropped the 'i' and extended the 'sh' because I'm special like that]
Both: [immediately interested] Arashi! いいなあーーーーーあ!
Girl Quiet: 見たい! 嵐好き? (I want to see them! You like Arashi?)
Me: Yes, I like them very much. [grins]
Girl Talkative: Aaah... g- goods... [makes hand motions of 'lots' and gives up] いっぱい買ったんですか? (Did you buy a lot?)
Me: Yes. I bought a lot.
Both: [make a few more envious noises and then go DEAD QUIET; Girl Talkative keeps looking at Girl Quiet and asking what else she should ask]
Me: [desperately tries to think of something else to say]
Girl Talkative: Ah! Who... [looks to Girl Quiet for confirmation]
Girl Quiet: Whoって誰.
Girl Talkative: [still to Girl Quiet] Who do...? Who are you like?
Me: Who do I like?
Girl Talkative: Yes. Who do you like? In Arashi?
Me: Nino.
Both: [noises of understanding]
Girl Talkative: Why?
Me: [slowly] Because, I think he's very funny. [sees incomprehension] すごいおもしろいから. I like つっこみ.
Both: [laugh]
Girl Talkative: Do you see Himitsu no Arashi-chan?
Me: Yes, I watch it.
Both: [giggle excitedly]
Girl Talkative: VS Arashi.
Me: Yes.
Girl Talkative: [looks to Girl Quiet to ask about other shows]
Girl Quiet: Arashi ni Shiyagare.
Me: Yes, I watch it.
Girl Talkative: [is now on a roll] Yamada Tarou Monogatari.
Me: Yes, I saw it.
Girl Talkative: Ryuusei no Kizuna.
Me: Yes, I saw it.
Girl Quiet: あのやつ... ホームレスの...
Me: Fleeter? Yes, I'm watching it.
Girl Quiet: Did you... see- eh- watch?
Me: See.
Girl Quiet: Did you see Ohoku?
Me: Yes, I saw it.
Both: [flap excitedly - I'm not kidding about the flapping]
Girl Quiet: 見たい!
Girl Talkative: [COMPLETELY CHANGES TRACK] Did you see Q10?
Me: [blinks, shakes head] No, I haven't.
Girl Talkative: Do you like AKB48?
Me: Ehhhhh.... 聞いたことあるんだけど... (I've heard of them, but...)
Girl Talkative: Ah, so-so?
Me: [nods] So-so.
Girl Talkative: Do you like EXILE?
Me: それもso-so. (That's also so-so.)
Girl Talkative: Do you like...
Girl Quiet: 何だけ? キスマイ? (What're they called? Kiss-mai?)
Me: それもso-so.
Girl Quiet: え? 知ってる?

Me: *nods*
Girl Quiet: Kanjani8?
Me: すごい好き.

Me: ... No.
Both: {laugh]
Girl Talkative: Kat-tun?
Me: So-so.
Girl Quiet: News?
Me: So-so. In Johnny's I like...
Both: [lean in eagerly]
Me: Arashi, Kanjani8, TOKIO, and V6.
Girl Quiet: [puts her hands to her head like she's so happy she can't stand it and squees] V6?!?!
Girl Talkative: Kinki Kids!?
Me: I like them, but I don't really listen to them.
Girl Quiet: 声が違過ぎだよね. (Their voices are too different)
Girl Talkative: [very certain of herself] I am not. Interested in. Johnny's.
Teacher: [comes along behind them and says very pointedly] そろそろですね. (Move along.)
Both: [start to leave]
Girl Talkative: Let's talk again!
Me: [laughs] Okay!
That was about half of my lunch break. They nearly bounced out of the teacher's room.
Girl Talkative: [in English] Hello.
Me: Hello.
