It had only been a day since Kyo had returned and had locked himself away in his rooms, refusing to answer anyone’s calls.[1] It had annoyed him and most of his subordinates, but Yoshiki knew better than to try and force Kyo into doing something he didn’t want to do. As it was, perhaps that had been the best choice. Hara Toshimasa had made no secret of his desire to hunt down Kyo and speak to him. Perhaps Kyo had been waiting that out until he got himself together?
Yoshiki now paced his office wearily, trying to bring his mind back to the present, where he could absorb the latest developments and decide what to do about them. Kyo stood in the shadows of the dimly lit room, simply watching the General, more comfortable there than he ever would be in broad day light. At least in the shadows people could not see his face to stare at it.
“So now there are three.”
“Yes. Tactics, Gunner, and myself. I will see Hara Toshimasa before this day cycle is over.”
Had they been talking about anyone else, and had he been any other person, Yoshiki would have been very confused, and would have had no trouble letting Kyo know just that. As it was, anything involving the Specials Yoshiki remembered too well, and he stopped his pacing to stare sharply at Kyo. In the back of his mind, he thought, It’s about goddamned time.
“Nikkura agreed?”
If he had been anyone else, Kyo thought, the General would have sounded surprised. If he were going to be honest with himself, he had been surprised when he’d heard that Hara was on the proverbial warpath, trying to hunt him down. The fact that Hara was looking for him because he wanted to be tested ... well that mostly just made him slightly confused, but Kyo assumed that he just wanted to prove to Nikkura that he could make it.
“Tactics apparently did not have much choice after they were phoned by Gunner. Hara was there when it happened.” He shrugged eloquently. Most of the actions he made were eloquent, really, as he was far better at expression with them than with words.
The General nodded, “Run your test, then. What further progress has been made with Stealth?”
If he had been a human, Kyo decided, he would have felt sheepish, “None. I have had to let the prospective’s be while reigning in Gunner and convincing Tactics.”
“Then after you have decided on Hara?”
“I will return to the subjects.”
“Work quickly. They are approaching fast; their ships – ”
“Are being deployed, yes, I’ve been reading the News-pads.”
“What are they coming for, Star Child?” Yoshiki asked quietly, his face serious, “What do they need from Earth so desperately that they couldn’t just ask for it? I know you know. You have been keeping this knowledge from me since you came here, asking to put together your team of Specials.”
Kyo emerged from his precious shadows, walking towards the window that Yoshiki liked to stand in front of. He was well aware of the General’s eyes on him as he stopped and looked out over the main entrance of the Center.
“The previous General didn’t believe me when I first asked for help. Not at first.”[2]
“You asked for help for a problem that didn’t exist at the time,” Yoshiki said, “It was ten years before Earth’s defense satellites even began to pick up traces of the ships.”
“Yet you began to give me the resources I needed for the ships two years before that,” the other rejoined, “You believed me when no one else did. Do you even know why?”
“... No.” the General admitted grudgingly.
Kyo smirked slightly, “I didn’t expect you to. I didn’t expect you to believe me either. Why should a child, claiming to come from the stars, be believed? Of course, you were a child then, too.”[3]
“What is your point, Star Child?” Yoshiki asked impatiently.
“I am no Child, General,” Kyo said, turning on his heel to face the General. He glared, anger sparking in his eyes. His voice had dropped to a deadly soft cadence when he next spoke, “I was born to them, General. I am one of theirs. They come here seeking me, yes, because I know the one thing that can stop them. But they come for something else, too. They want slaves, General, human slaves who remind them of what they used to be.”
Without waiting for his dismissal, the android walked out of Yoshiki’s office. The General stared at the door long after it slid shut behind Kyo, unblinking, allowing his mind to process exactly what Kyo had told him. Only then could he act accordingly.
“So I take it he doesn’t hate you anymore.”
“I’m back in my room and not dead, aren’t I?” Kaoru glared half-heartedly – he was, after all, glaring at a phone, “I like to think that he didn’t hate me at all; prior to this moment or otherwise.”
Die snorted, “Like he would ever. He’s been attached to your hip for how long now?”
“Twelve years,” the braided man replied promptly. There was a short beat, “Not that I did much to encourage him to go away.”
“Tell me about it, you pedophile – and you said you didn’t want to see the new kid. Hah!” Kaoru could almost see Die rolling his eyes. “... So he actually wants to take Kyo’s test and join the Specials?”
“Mmm.”
“You sound thrilled.”
“Oh, and I am just insanely thrilled. Not only do I have to worry about your ass, now I have to worry about his, too.”
“But he’ll be with you during all this. Aren’t you glad about that?”
Kaoru sighed and rolled onto his back, propping his legs up against the wall and letting his head hang over the edge of the bed. “Before I could content myself with the knowledge that he’d be safe here – safer, at any rate. Now, unless he gets rejected – and I have no doubt that he will be accepted – he’s going to be out there fighting these things with us. I had hoped that it would only be me of us out there; Kyo I know can take care of himself and anyone else doesn’t matter. With you and Totchi out there ... ugh, can you imagine the distraction you’re going to cause me?”
“Making sure we don’t screw up?” Die teased gently.
“I’m Tactics around here, buddy,” Kaoru half-smiled, “My plans had better be followed to the letter – I don’t appreciate them being screwed up.”
“Slaver.”
“No, that would be Kyo. My plans are based off his orders.”
“Really?”
“Mmm-hmm.”
“You mean he really knows that much more about the threat than we or our Intelligence do?”
“Yep.”
“Fucker.”
“Exactly.”
The redhead on the phone shifted positions, “I always thought that the General and the staff were just trying to boost his mysterious and intimidating aura or something. Or that he really only knew what we did.”
“You think the General would have put him in charge of this if he knew what everyone else did?” it was Kaoru’s turn to snort, “Please. I don’t know how much he knows exactly, ’cause he won’t tell anyone but the General, but it’s more than anyone else on Earth. He knows something about them that we don’t, that holds the key to their eventual destruction, and that’s why when he says something, you listen.”
“Right. I’ll keep that in mind. ... So when is the test going down?”
It would have taken a deaf man to not recognize the change of subject. Kaoru let it slide this time; Die would be learning more than he ever wanted to know about the Star soon enough. He moved his head so he could look at the newly upside-down digital numbers on his clock. It was 11 o’clock – Toshiya had gone out bright and early that morning to track down Kyo after having been unsuccessful yesterday.
“Couldn’t tell you; I’m not allowed to watch or be in the general area where it’s taking place. It might be in a couple of hours, if Totchi found Kyo. It might be tonight, if he’s still looking for him.”
“Translated: You aren’t going to find out because you don’t want to watch.”
Kaoru said nothing in reply to the gentle reproach. Die was free to call him a coward, because he was partially right, but Kaoru really didn’t know when it was happening and was mostly sure he wouldn’t be allowed there anyway.
“I’m free to talk all night, unless something interesting happens.”
“Joy of joys,” the redhead snickered into the phone, “Hey, I’m going out with my parents again, soon, but I’ll ring you when I get back. It’s just dinner, so I doubt it’ll be that long.”
“Fine,” Kaoru sniffled melodramatically into the receiver, “leave me and have your fun!”
Die laughed, “You’ll get along well enough without me, I’m sure, baka. Go ask Shinya on a date or something.”
“Right. And set myself up for rejection? Maybe when Toshiya isn’t still pissed off at me.”
“Is it that bad?”
“We’ll see when he’s done.”
The braided man looked forlornly at Toshiya’s bed, across the room from his own. The younger man had pushed them apart while he’d been out moping in the common room, and he hadn’t thought it safe to comment when he’d come back. He’d been lucky to at least receive a cordial greeting – the temperature in the room must have dropped to freezing while he’d been out. He’d had a damn hard him falling asleep, unused to not being in the same bed with his lover, and from the sounds that came from the other side of the room, Toshiya had had those same problems.
“Indeed. Well, good luck with that.”
Kaoru laughed dully, “Thanks, shlemiel.”[4]
“Welcome, shnook,” the redhead said cheerfully, “Talk to you later.”
“Mata,” the tactician said softly. He clicked the ‘off’ button, not yet feeling motivated enough to get up from his awkward position to place it back in the cradle. Instead, he let it hang loosely in his hand and stared at it pensively for a while before a faint smile crossed his lips, “Note to self: Stop teaching Die antiquated and obsolete language. Now he can insult back.” He let his arm drop heavily to the bed, and stared up at the ceiling, contemplating the smooth concrete and plaster as if it held the answer to life’s mysteries. A trickle of sweat rolled its way down the back of his neck and into his hair, and he scrubbed it away with his hand irritably. “That’s it, I’m taking a shower.”
Shinya had spent the better part of the last few hours trying to decide whether or not he should go into Kaoru’s room to tell him that Toshiya had gone to see Kyo. He figured that the older man probably knew that his lover had arranged to meet with Kyo, because otherwise they wouldn’t have been fighting, but he didn’t know if Kaoru knew that Toshiya and Kyo had met and left the Center. He didn’t know if Kaoru would want to know that, when he thought about it, and that had been the major cause of his indecision.
“Shinya?”
The young blonde looked up, blinking at Kazuki. The purple haired boy looked painfully exasperated – Sakito, Isshi, Brian and Shin just looked slightly annoyed. Though they had been age-mates for the last ten years Shinya got the feeling that none of them really liked him. That feeling might or might not have had something to do with the fact that Sakito, Shin, Brian and Alastair had made it a practice to gang up on him in every combat class they’d had together.
“Please stop pacing and tell someone what’s wrong. It’s really distracting.”
Shinya looked down, realizing that at some point he had indeed gotten up and begun to pace around the common room. He offered a sheepish smile and ran a hand distractedly through his hair.
“Sorry. Nothing’s wrong. Too caught up in thinking.”
“All right,” Kazuki replied, eyeing him carefully.
I wonder if he doesn’t believe me? Shinya thought sarcastically. “Sorry,” he said again, “I’ll be fine if I stop thinking.”
“Won’t we all,” laughed Miyavi, walking into the room with Nao and Tetsu.
The two older boys walked slightly behind Miyavi, as not all could fit into the door at once, but once inside they resumed their positions walking side-by-side. It amazed Shinya at times, how like the Instructors and Officers the students were. The young blonde greeted his elders accordingly and quickly backed out of the common room.
“Maybe I’ll take a shower, get my mind off this crap. Then I’ll see Kaoru,” he muttered to himself, and headed off resolutely in the direction of his dorm.
The water was warm and the bathroom filled with steam, fogging up all the mirrors and putting a fine haze over everything. Kaoru sighed happily to himself, scrubbing his fingers through his hair. It wasn’t often he let his hair out of it’s unusual hair style – it was much easier to just keep it in the braids and not have to worry about it in the mornings (other than some hair-holder and a quick finger-comb, at any rate). When he did let it down, though, it became one of his greatest weaknesses – he would agree to jump off a bridge if the person playing with his hair asked it of him.
He was glad he had decided to take a shower when he did – had he waited any longer the bathroom might be full of his age-mates, fresh out of their Refreshers. His own Refreshers had been last week, with Die, before all the crap with the Specials had begun. Kaoru frowned at his own mental reminder of exactly why he was taking this short-notice shower. He resisted the urge to punch the wall ... for all of three seconds.
“Fuck!” he yelled, though whether it was because he was still pissed off or because his hand hurt he wasn’t quite sure.
“You have to stop doing that,” said a quiet voice.[5]
Kaoru spun around on the balls of his feet, bringing his injured hand to his side protectively. His eyes widened slightly, then narrowed as more lecherous thoughts took the place of the initial, Holy fuck where did Shinya come from? In their stead, Holy fuck Shinya isn’t wearing anything more than a towel, repeated itself a few times.
Shinya tilted his head to the side, “Kaoru?”
The older man blinked, “Oh, sorry.”
“About what? Punching the wall?”
“Not answering. Wasn’t expecting anyone to be here,” Kaoru shrugged.
“Ah,” the younger man murmured, nodding slightly, “Neither was I, actually.” He dropped his towel and moved self-consciously towards another shower head, biting his lip. Then he marched towards Kaoru with a determined look in his eye, grabbing onto his wrist and holding up the injured hand. “Stop distracting me from my point – I was trying to say that you shouldn’t be running around punching walls.”
“I wasn’t running; I was standing still,” Kaoru said, offering a crooked grin.
Shinya glared at him, and opened his mouth to say some more, but the older man’s mouth was suddenly on his. The young blonde’s eyes shot open, not blinking even when water splashed near or into them, and he instinctively started to pull away.
What in the name of the Deities is he doing?!
Kaoru’s free arm wrapped around Shinya’s waist before he could move sufficiently away, never once parting their lips until the younger man stopped struggling. Then he moved his face away, just enough so their noses were touching. Shinya moved his head back farther, craning his neck at an odd angle.
“What – ”
Kaoru cut him off with his lips once again. Once again he waited until Shinya was relaxed before pulling away, “You talk too much.” The younger man tilted his head to the side, caught between trying to berate Kaoru and reply wittily to his accusation. The elder chuckled and leaned in again, “Try to kiss back this time, ‘kay? It’s boring when you don’t.”
And he kissed him a third time. This time Shinya had at least had some warning – and the feel of Kaoru’s lips on his had become familiar just from the first two kisses. Sometimes, Shinya thought, having hyper-sensitive skin and picture-perfect memory came in very handy. He let the older man wait a few seconds anyway, defiantly. Kaoru nearly crowed when he felt the subtle but definite movement of Shinya’s lips against his own. He glided his tongue leisurely over the younger man’s bottom lip and slipped it inside the hot mouth, exploring the crevices freely.
Shinya nearly moaned, and would have, had not his mind been racing at a hundred miles a second and his mouth been full of Kaoru’s tongue. First Kaoru attacked his neck and now he was caught in a real kiss. Without Toshiya. The young blonde pushed Kaoru away suddenly.
“What about Toshiya?”
Kaoru stared blankly at him for a second, but rather than getting flustered or angry, as Shinya had expected, he cocked his head to the side, “Toshiya is with Kyo right now, Shinya, getting tested for the Specials. I thought you knew that.”
“I mean, what are you doing? Have you no regard for your boyfriend?!”
The older man just laughed, “See now, that’s the fun part.”
“What’s the fun part?”
“You’ll see,” Kaoru said cryptically, and leaned in again, this time going for the joint of Shinya’s neck and shoulders. He kissed the area repeatedly, stopping every now and then to suck on and lick at it, waiting for the younger man to relax once more. His hands glided slowly over Shinya’s ribs and back, reveling in the feel of his smooth skin.
Even if he had wanted to keep protesting, Shinya couldn’t have put two words together once Kaoru’s hands began their travels over his torso. It was too distracting, coupled with the older man’s teeth nibbling on his neck – it felt too good to talk through it. His own hands, without him knowing it, had raised themselves to clutch Kaoru’s shoulders; they felt strong and smooth under his fingers. Kaoru’s mouth was hot and wet on his skin – Shinya vaguely remembered that his skin was wet already from the shower jet, but paid that fact no mind – and his teeth were scraping along his neck with just the right amount of pressure.
He’s so good at this ... Shinya sighed dreamily to himself. He thought fuzzily that he should be, given all the practice he had with Toshiya, and he smiled against Kaoru’s chest. He was jarred to the present briefly – when had he leaned against his friend like that? Kaoru’s hand tangled his hair and brushed it out again, and Shinya decided it didn’t matter.
“Kao ... ” the younger blonde murmured.
“Mmm?”
“Kiss me again.”
Kaoru chuckled and obeyed the command, tracing Shinya’s lips with his tongue and slipping it into Shinya’s mouth when they parted. This time, though, Shinya touched Kaoru’s tongue with his own, engaging them in a playful battle. Shinya allowed Kaoru to win, pressing closer to him as his own desires grew. How long had he been day-dreaming about moments like these, again? Kaoru broke away from the kiss, short of breath and grinning, when Shinya rubbed their groins together.
“Enthusiastic little thing, aren’t you?”
“I’m deprived,” Shinya retorted.
“Aww, the poor baby. We’ll have to remedy that ... ”
“Oh?”
“Mmm,” Kaoru nodded, grinning from ear to ear. He reached down and grasped the other’s cock, stroking it slowly.
Shinya bit his lip to stifle a groan as he felt the blood rush from his head to his groin and heat raced through his body. His head lolled forward to rest once more against Kaoru’s chest. The older man chuckled low in his throat, and Shinya could feel the vibrations. One of Kaoru’s hands was suddenly on his ass, massaging and fondling it. It was so different from Kyo, who was aggressive and didn’t understand the nuances of the human body; and yet it was so like him in that Kaoru was assertive and sure of himself. Shinya wondered if Toshiya felt safe when he was in this position, like he himself did right now. He wondered why the thought of Toshiya wasn’t making him feel guilty like it should have.
“Shinya?” the older man choked out, hating to break the near silence with words. His voice was a low purr that not even Shinya with his self-control at it’s peak could have said no to.
Shinya thrust into Kaoru’s hand, his own hands grabbing the older blonde’s neck, twining in his long hair, and forcing their lips to crash together. Kaoru pumped his erection firmly in response, jamming his tongue into his mouth. His wet fingers trailed down the crack of Shinya’s ass, one pushing it’s way in steadily. The younger man let his head fall back and bit his lip again to keep from moaning. Kaoru’s mouth immediately attached itself to Shinya’s neck to make up for the loss, and another finger pushed its way in, stretching Shinya slowly, giving him the time to adjust that Kyo never had. It was more uncomfortable than painful – the young blonde decided that the real pain was coming from Kaoru’s slow pace.
“Kao ... ” he hissed.
“Yes, Shin-chan?”
Shinya decided that Kaoru sounded amused, and he was not amused by that. He pushed himself down on Kaoru’s fingers, groaning, “Get a move on there!“ He moaned again when the movement caused the other’s fingers to brush over his prostate, sending jolts of pleasure through him. “Aah!” he gasped.
“There it is,” Kaoru sing-songed.
The younger man growled, even as Kaoru added a third finger, stretching him out fully, and rubbed his prostate again. He moaned loudly, listening to it echo off the walls of the bath-room. Kaoru’s free hand had left his waist, and Shinya found himself looking for it, missing its presence. But further inspection found it pouring soap into its palm. Shinya followed it’s path and watched the hand rub the soap over Kaoru’s erection, then felt himself being lifted into the air. He wrapped his legs around Kaoru’s waist instinctively, leaning the bulk of his weight on the tile wall to make movement easier for both of them. The older man positioned himself under Shinya, then, quite deliberately, stopped.
“Ready?”
“Kao!”
“What?”
“Come on.”
“No, come in. You’re the one coming on.”[6]
Shinya groaned at the bad joke, and decided that Kaoru was trying to frustrate him deliberately. He growled his decision to the older blonde between clenched teeth. Kaoru laughed and kissed the underside of his chin softly.
“That’s because I am.”
Before Shinya could protest that as cruel and unusual punishment, however, Kaoru was maneuvering them so he was thrusting up, and Shinya was sliding down. The younger man moaned as he was penetrated, using his legs to push himself down on Kaoru’s cock fully. He bit and sucked on Kaoru’s neck as the other man started thrusting, setting a moderately fast pace.
Deities ... so long ... too long ...
Having found it, Kaoru made quite sure to hit Shinya’s prostate with every thrust, and the sensations were threatening to overwhelm the younger blonde. He held out admirably until Kaoru’s hand, which had been supporting his back, reached around to grab his cock and pump it instead. Shinya bit Kaoru’s shoulder hard enough to draw blood, but the other blonde didn’t seem to notice. If anything his thrusts became that much more frenzied and irregular.
“Kao ... Deities ... Kao ... ” Shinya panted.
He felt, more than heard, Kaoru’s breathless chuckle, “Never took you ... for the ... vocal type. ... Always the ... silent ones, eh?”
“Shut ... up,” the younger man groaned.
He clenched the muscle of his ass-hole around Kaoru’s cock and the other had to bite his bottom lip to keep from moaning himself. Shinya had a feeling both of them were going to have very swollen lips tomorrow morning, but didn’t care. He clenched around Kaoru again, who tightened his grip around Shinya’s cock in retaliation, sending the younger man into unexpected orgasm. He shuddered as he came over Kaoru’s hand violently; and the force of his orgasm sent Kaoru’s tenuous grasp on control flying out the proverbial window. The older blonde was barely able to keep them from falling as he quickly followed Shinya’s lead.
“That ... ” Shinya panted, “was pretty ... damn ... good.”
“I know,” Kaoru grinned cheekily.
The younger man smacked his shoulder, glaring playfully, feeling lazy and satisfied in post-coital haze. He didn’t want to do anything ... didn’t want to move or to think. He realized they were lucky they were in the shower to begin with, and passed that realization on to Kaoru. The other man just nodded and slid out of Shinya slowly, holding him close once they were both standing on their own. Suddenly the weight of everything they had just done came crashing down on the young blonde.
“Fuck,” he hissed.
“Shhhh,” Kaoru hushed soothingly, as if he had been waiting for that.
“But we just ... you have ... Toshiya ... ”
“It’s all right, Shin-chan.”
“What are you talking about?! It’s not all right! You have a boyfriend; and I am not that boyfriend! How can you say ‘it’s all right’?! He’ll hate me now!”
“No he won’t,” said a voice, husky with lust.
Shinya’s head whipped around so fast that Kaoru was afraid he might get whiplash. But Shinya wasn’t paying attention to anything but the fact that Toshiya was standing there, in the bathroom, leaning calmly against the counter of sinks, and Kaoru wondered whether or not Shinya would even notice if he did get whiplash.
“Toshiya!” the young blonde gasped.
Kaoru offered his long-time lover a small and loving smile, his eyes flicking down to the top of Shinya’s head in invitation. Toshiya took up on it gladly, walking towards them, a hungry look in his eyes.
“You wouldn’t believe how dirty one gets, taking Kyo’s tests,” he said off-handedly.
“Oh, I have a vague idea,” Kaoru shot back, greeting his lover with a kiss on the cheek.
“Well, I need a shower,” Toshiya murmured, catching Kaoru’s lips with his own, ravaging them, shoving his tongue into Kaoru’s mouth. His hand grabbed Shinya’s neck when they broke apart, pulling him closer. “Wash my back?”
End - Five:Chapter
NOTES:
[1] Okay, time for a little math here. Die wakes up at 2:00 AM, his mom drugs him with pain-killers, he wakes up again at 6:20 AM. At this point he goes to call Kaoru, to explain the whole situation. Kyo had already left the house the night before, so shortly after Toshiya is told that he could be on the Specials and goes out looking for him, Kyo gets back to the center. He has no desire to deal with Toshiya, and so hides away, forcing him to wait out the day. Now he’s come out of hiding to talk to Yoshiki, and has been accosted by Toshiya to take the test.
[2] ‘Cause, see, Kyo is really old. I mean, really old. He came down to Earth before Yoshiki took over as the General, and Yoshiki at this point has been the General for a good twenty years.
[3] Childhood in this world lasts until age 40. Adulthood is reached at 80. Middle-age has been moved back to 120. The average age of death isn’t until 160.
[4] Shlemiel; shnook: both mean “fool” in Yiddish.
[5] Kaoru is in the habit of punching things. Not people, necessarily, but things. Doors, walls, trees – you name it, chances are he’s punched it. Never mind that it hurts like a bitch.
[6] Yes, it’s a terrible joke. You know it, I know it, they know it. Oh well ^^
