May. 1st, 2005 12:49 pmSaw Shi mian mai fu, or House of Flying Daggers, last night. I was fairly excited for it - I didn't have a chance to see it in theatres, which made me sad at the time, but now I'm kind of glad. I might have mourned the loss of the money for the ticket had I paid for it.
Frankly, House of Flying Daggers was a colossal disappointment. There were amazing battle scenes, to be sure, and the costumes and backdrops (ie: houses and scenery) were all gorgeous; not to mention the leading male (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Zhang Ziyi was gorgeous as always, and played a very convincing blind girl. But the ending left so much to be desired that I was practically tearing out my hair from frustration. A huge clamactic battle scene was set up - and COMPLETELY IGNORED!!! What the hell?! Not to mention the near soap-opera quality the movie took on at the end. I don't think I've ever seen that much sex in a Chinese movie, or even an Asian movie in general, and the pace was completely Americanized.
All in all, for battle scenes and the like (especially the bamboo forest one), the movie gets about 3 out of 5 in my book. But sacrificing plot for soap opera was not cool. Not cool at all.
